The wildflower plant images in this product were taken between 2004 and 2013 as the various species progressed through their natural cycles.

2004 pictures show desert plants in about the 9th year of a drought, while 2005 pictures show plants in a wetter than average year. The contrast is major for some species. 2006 - 2013 conditions were variable year-by-year and by locale. Each picture (all are JPEGs) contains the date it was taken in the picture’s properties information (see the 'Browse the Flowers' page for tips on accessing this information).

Over 70,000 original photos were taken in hundreds of locations, including All Maricipa Co. Regional Parks and Phoenix Preserves, McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, many areas of Tonto National Forest, especially near New River, Cave Creek, and Verde River, Superstition Wilderness and Sierra Anchas east of Mesa, Four Peaks Wilderness, Mt. Ord, and Mazatzal Wilderness from the Beeline Hwy 87, Agua Fria National Monument and adjacent forest areas, Vulture Peak, Hassayampa River Preserve, and Sophie's Flat area near Wickenburg, Mingus and Woodchute Mountains and surrounding areas, Bradshaw Mountains backroads from Hwy 74 north to Prescott, Sedona area backroads and hiking trails, Walnut Canyon near Flagstaff and areas south to Camp Verde, Fossil Creek and Pine Mountain Wilderness, Mount Graham near Safford, and Saguaro National Monument.

The roughly 3150 images selected for this edition reflect a balance between including as many beautiful images as possible, and capturing certain species characteristics.

There may be difficulties classifying wildflowers from pictures, especially, for example, when highly similar (visually) species within a genus are found in an area, and/or final species determination requires laboratory analysis of the plant's internal characteristics. In such cases the plant identity information will be in the form ‘genus sp.’ for example - ‘Amsinckia sp.’
